Spire Healthcare launches integrated workplace health solution to tackle rising sickness absence

Spire Healthcare has launched a new end-to-end workplace health offering aimed at helping employers take a more proactive approach to employee wellbeing, as health-related inactivity and absence continue to rise across the UK workforce.
The new proposition, Spire Workplace Health, brings together prevention, advisory services and clinical treatment into a single, integrated model. It includes access to GP services, physiotherapy, mental health support, diagnostics and hospital care, alongside occupational health assessments and workplace wellbeing programmes.
The launch comes at a critical time for UK employers. An estimated 2.8 million working-age adults are currently economically inactive due to health issues, while sickness absence and reduced productivity are costing businesses between £4,000 and £5,000 per employee each year. Employees are also taking an average of 9.4 sick days annually.
The scale of the issue is accelerating. Recent research from Simplyhealth shows that more than five million working days have already been lost to mental ill health in the UK this year, underlining the growing pressure on employers to move beyond reactive support.
Spire’s model is designed to address what it describes as a persistent gap in workplace health provision, where support often begins only once an employee is already unwell.
Jon Clover, Managing Director of Spire Workplace Health, said: “Most of us will face health issues during our working lives, either personally or offering support to colleagues as a manager, but current solutions for businesses are fragmented and far too reactive.
“Workplace health in the UK is at a tipping point. Employers are grappling with increasingly complex employee health needs, rising absence and reduced productivity.
Spire Workplace Health is designed to provide an end-to-end service that helps businesses predict risks, offer preventative solutions, support employees early, and provide fast, high-quality treatment when needed.
“Proactively supporting employees to manage their health in a timely and safe way, from onboarding to retirement, in turn also benefits employers and the UK economy.”
Spire’s integrated approach combines population health insights, preventative interventions and direct access to treatment pathways, including musculoskeletal and mental health services. Early intervention is a central focus, with internal data showing that access to physiotherapy within five days can lead to return-to-work rates of more than 90 per cent.
The offering also includes workplace health surveillance, wellbeing workshops, ergonomic assessments and vaccinations, alongside advisory services, such as new starter screening and support for managing long-term health conditions.
As organisations continue to face rising levels of stress, burnout and musculoskeletal issues, the move reflects a broader shift in how workplace health is being delivered. Increasingly, the focus is on continuous, joined-up support across the employee lifecycle, rather than reactive interventions once problems arise.
