A third of British workers don’t use workplace health benefits

New research from insurer Simplyhealth reveals that 34 per cent of British workers do not use the health benefits offered by their employers.Among those who do, more than half (53 per cent) face barriers to access.  Common obstacles include needing permission from a line manager (16 per cent), pre-authorisation from a manager or insurer (13 per cent), overly complicated processes (13 per cent) and exclusion of pre-existing conditions (9 per cent).

Employees say clearer processes would boost uptake: 37 per cent would be more likely to use benefits if they were simpler, 36 per cent if services were quicker to access and 22 per cent want coverage for pre-existing conditions. Faster claims payments (20 per cent) and avoiding time off work for appointments (19 per cent) are also important.

Employer sentiment shows growing concern: 73 per cent say they feel responsible for staff health in light of NHS pressures, but 86 per cent face challenges in implementing benefit schemes, especially covering pre-existing conditions (31 per cent).

The benefits of accessible health cover are clear: 60 per cent of employees say it improves happiness at work, 48 per cent say it’s a key retention factor, and among those without benefits, over half believe such support would boost productivity and reduce sick days.

Paul Schreier, CEO of Simplyhealth, said:

“Employers recognise the huge responsibility they have to support the health of their people and the value it creates in terms of reducing long-term sickness and boosting productivity. Workplace health benefits are a big part of these efforts, but too often traditional offers are complex and difficult to access.”

The research underlines the opportunity for employers to simplify and expand access to health benefits. With most employees linking cover to greater happiness, productivity and retention, addressing barriers could unlock significant value for both staff and organisations.
