World Green Building Week highlights link between sustainable workplaces and employee wellbeing

World Green Building Week 2025 (8–12 September) is spotlighting how businesses can boost employee wellbeing by investing in greener, healthier buildings.
The campaign, led by the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) and its global network, is built around the theme “Business goes better when you’re bold on buildings”.
Organisers say sustainable workplaces are fast becoming a competitive advantage, not only for climate resilience and cost savings, but also for the health and happiness of employees.
Research shows that green buildings can enhance cognitive performance by more than 25 per cent and cut staff sickness by 30 per cent. By creating spaces with better air quality, natural light and climate-resilient design, companies can promote healthier, more productive environments where employees feel supported and valued.
For organisations, the benefits extend beyond productivity. Wellbeing-focused workplaces improve retention, strengthen company culture and foster greater collaboration. Local communities also gain from climate-resilient, low-carbon developments that protect both people and planet.
Cristina Gamboa, CEO of WorldGBC, said sustainable buildings are now a core business strategy:
“The companies stepping up now are not just delivering greener communities, cleaner air, and healthier homes and workplaces – they’re demonstrating the leadership that all businesses will need to thrive in a competitive future.”
Throughout the week, around 100 events are taking place across five continents, showcasing how sustainable buildings can drive resilience, growth and wellbeing.
World Green Building Week, now in its 17th year, runs until 12 September.
