Many employers lack clear policies for staff with long-term illness, says GRiD

More than a third of employers provide support for staff with serious illness or injury on a case-by-case basis, new research from industry body Group Risk Development (GRiD) has found.
The study highlights concerns that without formal frameworks, employees may not receive consistent or adequate help during periods of long-term absence. GRiD warned that informal approaches can leave businesses exposed, particularly when dealing with complex health conditions.
Katharine Moxham, spokesperson for GRiD, said:
“Employers that only offer support on a case-by-case basis are leaving themselves open to risk. Without formalising provision, staff are less likely to receive the consistent, structured help they need to manage long-term health issues and return to work successfully. Having clear policies not only improves outcomes for employees but also helps organisations maintain productivity and reduce absence costs.”
GRiD is urging employers to review existing benefits and embed structured support for employees dealing with illness or injury, including access to vocational rehabilitation and group risk protection.
