A Chichester-based law firm is using local rewards to support its B Corp ambitions, while strengthening employee wellbeing and its connection to the local economy.

Family-owned Kenny Solicitors has switched from national retailer gift cards to the Chichester Gift Card for employee rewards, allowing the firm to keep reward spend within the local economy as part of its journey towards B Corp certification. The card is now used to recognise staff birthdays and special occasions across the year, supporting a more personal and community-focused approach to workplace benefits.

Kenny Solicitors, which employs 52 people across Chichester, Arundel, Fareham, Emsworth and Eastergate, said the move aligns with the environmental stewardship and circularity pillar of B Corp certification. By using a local gift card that can only be spent with registered businesses in the city, the firm says it can demonstrate tangible positive impact on its community while supporting employee wellbeing through meaningful recognition.

Town & City Gift Cards, developed by global gift card specialist Miconex, are closed-loop gift cards branded to more than 100 towns, cities and districts across the UK and Ireland. They are designed to lock spend into local economies by encouraging use with independent and national businesses based locally. Miconex reported £24m in local gift card sales in 2025, a 60 per cent increase on the previous year, as more organisations look to align reward strategies with social value and wellbeing goals.

Louise Kenny, co-founder of Kenny Solicitors, said the decision reflected both values and practical impact. “One of the criteria in B Corp certification is environmental stewardship and circularity, including contributing to the circular economy and pursuing positive impacts,” she said.

She added that keeping rewards local also supports a stronger sense of purpose for employees: “As a family-owned business, and as a person who has lived and worked in Chichester all my life, I’m a passionate supporter of the city. Once we knew about our local gift card, we realised it was a better choice for our local economy, ring-fencing our rewards spend into our city, unlike national cards where the benefit leaves the area.”

The move comes as interest in B Corp certification continues to grow. B Lab UK data shows awareness of B Corp in the UK has reached 51 per cent, the highest of any country surveyed. The UK is home to around a quarter of the world’s 9,500 B Corps, with 2,400 certified businesses. Research from B Lab UK also shows B Corps outperform ordinary businesses across measures including revenue growth, talent attraction, and social and environmental impact.

Colin Munro, chief executive of Miconex, said organisations are increasingly recognising their role in local wellbeing. “There is increased interest and understanding of the role that organisations can play in the success of their local community,” he said.“Local gift cards have the power to transform communities and enable organisations to have a tangible positive impact on their town, city or region.”

Natasha McLeod, chief executive of Chichester BID, said the approach shows how employee rewards can support both wellbeing and place-based impact. “Kenny Solicitors show how businesses can align values with practical decision-making, recognising both the tax efficiencies and the meaningful, measurable impact of keeping reward and incentive spend within Chichester city centre.”

For Kenny Solicitors, the decision reflects a wider view of workplace wellbeing, linking recognition and reward to purpose, place and positive impact. “A company should be a force for good for their local community,” said Kenny. “Choosing local gift cards where reward and incentive spend benefits the local community should be a no-brainer for any organisation.”
