This study explores how sleep quality influences work engagement and whether mental and physical health help explain that relationship. Survey data from employees across a range of industries showed that people who reported better sleep were more likely to feel energised, dedicated, and absorbed in their work. The findings suggest this relationship is largely explained by mental health rather than physical health. Employees with better sleep tended to report better mental wellbeing, which in turn was linked to higher work engagement. The study highlights sleep as an often-overlooked factor that can influence how people experience and perform at work.

This research highlights the connection between recovery, mental wellbeing, and engagement at work

  • Sleep quality may influence how motivated, energised, and engaged employees feel during the working day
  • Mental wellbeing appears to play an important role in translating recovery into positive work experiences
  • Supporting employee wellbeing may require attention to factors that sit beyond the workplace itself
  • Recovery is often overlooked in workplace wellbeing strategies despite its potential impact on performance and engagement
  • Engagement is not solely driven by workplace initiatives, leadership, or job design
  • Helping employees build sustainable habits around rest and recovery may complement other wellbeing interventions
  • The findings reinforce the importance of taking a whole-person approach to workplace wellbeing
