Building a Stronger Workplace Mental Health First Aid Programme
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) can play an important role in supporting employee wellbeing, but effective provision requires more than training alone. Developed by MHFA England and the Association of Mental Health First Aiders, these new workplace standards provide employers with a structured approach to establishing, managing and sustaining mental health first aid programmes.
A practical framework for mental health first aid in the workplace
The Workplace Mental Health First Aid Standards set out nine standards across four phases, helping organisations build effective MHFA provision and embed mental health support into workplace culture. Covering leadership commitment, MHFAider recruitment, training, role clarity, operational support and ongoing evaluation, the framework distinguishes between required standards and recommended best practice. It also provides practical considerations for smaller organisations. Designed for employers introducing Mental Health First Aid or reviewing existing arrangements, the guide helps organisations move beyond standalone training towards a coordinated, sustainable approach to workplace mental health support.
